For anyone going through suffering, one of the most frequently repeated phrases is “time is a healer”, or something to that effect.

It’s because time can take away feelings gradually, feelings that you don’t want there any more. It can make memories that are painful and fresh fade into insignificance, replaced by new ones.

The trouble is that this effect is not limited to bad experiences or bad memories. Time, the great leveller, can make good memories you want to keep fade into insignificance, replaced by bad ones that it can be hard to see beyond, back to where happiness and good memories prevailed. It can undo relationships in this way as over time, people forget the good, the history of how they came to be and can only see the bad or merely mundane present. Old memories will always fade to insignificance…

Time ‘heals’ us by erasing who we were.
