I was recently invited on board with Ja? Theatre Company as producer for their inaugural production, /Sylvia\. Ja? Theatre Company is a newly established theatre company founded by Dutch director Anne Mulleners and Norwegian Actor/ Dramaturge Melissa Syversen. Their ambition? To find ways to mix and adapt European theatre traditions, mainly focused on bringing together the seemingly opposing traditions of Regie theater and British text-based theatre. Their founding urge, to overcome the ever-constructed dichotomy between us ‘Britain’ and them ‘Europe’; in the theatre, at the very least.
/SYLVIA/ is the story of journalist Sylvia von Harden, told as she sits for her famous portrait by Otto Dix (1926). It will be the first time an English translation/ adaptation of the Luxembourgian text has been written for and performed on the English stage.
Sylvia was a prolific and controversial women throughout her time in Berlin. In her professional life and her private one, she just didn’t sit still. What version of Sylvia do we get to see here? Performed by a non-binary artist, Ja’s production is a metatheatrical exploration of womanhood, contemporary politics and art.
I took some preliminary rehearsal shots when I sat in with Ann and Melissa over the weekend.
The first preview goes live tomorrow night. If you would like to join us you can register at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/sylvia-tickets-43612442991?aff=efbeventtix
